在大学阶段, it is a student’s right whether or not they choose to self-disclose to request services. This is a very personal decision that we at 残疾学生资源 respect, and a decision that only the student can make for themselves. 在JDB电子寻求服务的学生必须 self-disclose the need for academic accommodations, 辅助艾滋病, 和/或服务 to the office of 残疾学生资源 at the Penn State campus they are attending.
自我表露意味着:
- Parents or anyone other than the student may not identify the student as having a disability or request services on the student’s behalf.
- 学生必须开始这个过程, 积极参与这个过程, and have direct interaction/contact with 残疾学生资源 throughout the requesting/providing accommodation process.
In order for a student's disorder or impairment to be considered a disability, the student must demonstrate through 文档 that the disorder/impairment meets the definition of a disability under Title II of the ADA Amendments Act (ADAAA) of 2008 and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. A disability is defined as a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities.
鉴于我们服务的学生人数, we strongly suggest applying for services as soon as possible; early on in the semester prior to the semester you wish to receive accommodations. Please keep in mind; this is a multi-step process that takes time to complete. If additional information is needed at any time during the process, 审查文件的程序可能会延迟, 这也可能延迟学业调整的交付, 辅助艾滋病, 和/或服务.
作为培养自我辩护技能的一部分, it is extremely important that the student completes these steps/forms, 不是父母或其他相关个人. 如果你不确定如何回答问题, feel free to ask a parent or other concerned individual for suggestions, 但是学生应该自己输入答案.
